How to Install Kali Linux on VMware: A Step-by-Step Guide
Kali Linux is an enterprise-purpose management tool for penetration testing and ethical hacking. Running a virtual machine (VM) in-house like VMware is the safest and greenest way to analyze, as it maintains a remote OS from your base PC.
Prerequisites
Before you begin, make sure your computer meets the simple requirements:
RAM: Minimum 4GB (8GB recommended).
Storage: At least 40GB of free space.
Virtualization: Enabled in the PC’s BIOS/UEFI settings.
Software : VMware Workstation Player (Free) or Pro mounted.
Step 2: Download Kali Linux Image
Instead of using a standard ISO, Kali provides "pre-built virtual machines" that can be customized for VMware.
Visit the genuine Kali Linux Download website.
Select the Virtual Machines tab.
Select the VMware version (64-bit) and click the download icon.
Once downloaded, extract the .Zip or .7z file using 7-Zip or WinRAR.
Step 3: Import Kali Linux into VMware
Since we downloaded the image, you don’t have to go through the lengthy installation process.
Open the VMware workstation.
Click "Open a Virtual Machine".
Navigate to the folder you extracted in step 1 .
Select the file ending in .Vmx (that’s the configuration file) and click Open.
Step 3: Optimize the hardware settings
Before you begin, control the power of your VM:
Click "Edit Digital Smartphones".
Memory: When the host has enough RAM, slide it up to 4GB.
Processors: Assign at least 2 cores for smooth overall performance.
Click OK.
Step 3: Launch Kali Linux
Click "Power on this virtual appliance."
If a pop-up asks whether you "Move it" or "Copy it" in the case of "I copied it".
Wait until boot collection is complete.
